Gun Inspection Checklist

Use this inspection checklist when accepting delivery of your new Walther P22 or inspecting a used P22 prior to purchasing. This checklist is not intended to provide an in depth analysis of the firearm but rather an overall assessment of the weapon.

BEFORE YOU INSPECT THE GUN

1. Ask permission from the gun owner before doing any of the following checklist items.

2. Verify that the pistol and all magazines are unloaded and clear.

WALTHER P22 PISTOL EQUIPMENT

Make sure all of the equipment is included. These items were included with my new Walther P22 in 2008.

1. Gun

2. Case

3. 2 magazines

4. Safety lock key

5. Field strip rod (VERY IMPORTANT)

6. Replaceable back strap(s) and replaceable front sights

7. Barrel wrench

8. Other accessories (if any)

PISTOL VISUAL INSPECTION

Visually inspect the gun and all of its parts for any sign of defects or excessive wear. Bring a light or magnifying glass if you need to. Bring a bore light if you have one. Make sure to bring your reading glasses if you use them.

1. Verify no obvious defects.

2. Lock back the slide. Inspect the barrel and "guts" with a bore light. If the barrel is dirty, it may be a good idea to clean it prior to inspection.

3. Inspect all magazines. Push down on the followers.

4. If permitted field strip the pistol and inspect the parts. (If buying a used gun, ask the owner to field strip the gun for you. Field stripping the Walther P22 can be a little tricky the first time so it is better to see someone else do it before trying it yourself.)

Pistol Safety Test

The Walther P22 has a manual firing pin safety near the hammer. When the lever is in the horizontal position and facing forward it is in the ready to fire position. It also has a magazine safety that will not allow the weapon to fire when a magazine is not installed into the grip. Test the function of both safeties.

1. Remove the magazine.

2. Move the safety lever back and forth a few times and visually verify that the hammer moves accordingly (very slight movement). When the safety lever covers the "F" the hammer should be in the "slightly back" position and not contacting the firing pin.

3. With the safety in the down (covering the F) position - pull the trigger. Nothing should happen with the magazine removed.

4. Insert the magazine and pull the trigger a few times. Verify the double action function of the gun. (Trigger and hammer both move and the gun "fires").

Pistol Functional Testing

When you can't test fire the gun, test the functionality of the gun to make sure everything feels right.

1. Rack it a few times (with no magazine).

2. Rack the slide with a magazine. Make sure slide locks back.

3. Test the slide stop lever.

4. Test the magazine release.

5. Test the slide release by pulling the slide (with no magazine).

6. Insert the magazine. Lock and unlock the safety lock feature with the key. (I never did like this feature. The key was too awkward and hard to use and consequently I never used it).

7. Pull the trigger a few times. Make sure the safety is on to prevent damage to the firing pin.

8. Try and test all magazines.

9. Verify that the slide is tight and free of wobble.

Pistol Warranty

Unfortunately the Walther Company does not provide a lifetime warranty on the P22. The warranty is only good for one year when purchased new. The following information about the warranty is taken directly from the Walther P22 manual.

Within the first year after the date of purchase, the Walther company will repair or replace your defective weapon free of charge provided the defect was not cause by your misuse or negligence. Please deliver the weapon to an authorized dealer, with a written description of the problem and proof of purchase."
